Trash Ambition - Listen to the "Does Anybody Like Madonna?" EP
as many times as you like before you buy it! BANDS Steveless - John Peel's final favourite pastime before his untimely death (John's that is). Wonky wonderpop, broken blues, noisy noise, spazmo stage antics, an uncanny knack of writing a song in less time than it takes to play the fucking thing, and a very healthy hatred of the general public. All of which make Steveless genius. (Rhys is now part of the Steveless live pop band, playing synth!) 3hostwomexicansandatinofspanners - THE best band in Bristol right now. Ivory Springer- Their power is matched by no other. Shellac, Fugazi, etc, are reference points, but they simply have to be seen. Big Joan - Seriously head-warping bass and wirey guitar embossed with an early PJ Harvey ethic and you have the band that have procuced one of the best albums to come out of Bristol in recent times, if not ever. Simon from Big Joan is also in Steveless on bass. Team Brick - Mental, unique, genius. Never does anywhere near the same set twice, changing musical style WAY more often than he changes his socks. Almost never plays the same place twice, favouring gigs in weird and wonderful places like public parks below towers. Team Brick is also in Steveless on "Giving it some cunt" duty, a.k.a. drums. WEBSITE UNDER CONSTRUCTION, SO IT DOESN'T WORK YET, AND THAT MAY NOT BE THE URL ANYWAYS Geisha - Noisy as fuck riff terrorists from Bristol. "Hymns for the Living Dead EP" is a must. Scarlatti Tilt - Dense, dark, moody and beautiful. What candles, cigarettes and the word eerie were invented for. Ben Mark - Storytelling songwriter with heartbreakingly ace tunes. SJ Esau - Jam stuffed to the Jeff Eyeballs full of brilliant ideas and fantastic songs. Great website too. Love him, for that is what he deserves. Gravenhurst - From a Nick Drake compared balladier to a space-rock Warp Records signee in 3 albums (one mini). He'll shoot you in the face if you don't listen. A Lion - A Drum machine-gun assault that is at times achingly beautiful and sparse and at others headfuckingly intense a la Big Black. One of the best vocalists in Bristol is amongst their ranks too. giveamanakick - Ace "Pixies/Fugazi/Helmet" (Careless Talk Costs Lives) duo from Limerick. Blew me away when we played with them in Exeter. Retrostone - Balls-out rock'n'roll from Neath, South Wales. FIRSTOFTHEGIANTS - A decent prospect since we played with them at their first gig ever at the White Bear in the summer of 2004. Friendly punk.
OTHER COOL SHIT Photography by Hugh 'Lensman' Spiller - The man responsible for our album photography. Multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist, and now multi-faceted with his Fact Fans and other promotional ventures. Links to all through the Lensmanship site. Choke Central - The place for information about the consistently brilliant Choke nights and for previous issues of the magazine. The Choke Forum - The important bit, the forum. Open minded chat about the greatest music in the World (and Blackbud! ;-). Go argue... The Voodoojunkie Forum - Another great Bristol music forum, with a more punk/metal/sarcastic edge. The Croft - THE best venue in Bristol by Miles ;-) The Louisiana - HOPEFULLY THE LOUIE WON'T HAVE CLOSED ON MONDAY WHEN IT HAS IT'S LICENCE RENEWAL HEARING. GOOD LUCK GUYS. A BRISTOL INSTITUTION. Miles the Munter's Livejournal - His Popeness. Miles spent over 53.4% of nights in 2004 at gigs. That's 195 days if you can't do maths. Hence, he's The Pope of the Bristol (and waaay beyond) music scene. He's also a lovely guy and very ticklish. Read his thoughts on bands and life here. Kewsound Studios - Where we recorded our album. Our drummer, Steve owns it. Yes. Toybox Studios - Utter genius. Ali and his magical basement of aural majesty recorded our new EP. Enchanting. Brilliant. Decode - NOW MONTHLY! Either a great Bristol Arts and Music Magazine, or a "sub-Vice ad-rag" ;-) You decide. On the first option. Venue Magazine - "Bristol and Bath's Magazine" Weekly gig, club and cinema listings, and some decent features too! Sex Pixels - They do the stunning visuals you see at Choke nights and in the blackout tent at Ashton Court. Nothing short of genius. Epitonic - Probably the greatest website in existence. Especially if you have unlimited broadband. Free, legal MP3s from some of the best bands in the World. Go discover... A retrospective of links that either aren't working at present, or to bands who've split, etc (it's worth giving them a try - Mclusky still works): Mclusky - THE best band in the World right now. NOW SADLY SPLIT (JANUARY 2005) Mclusky, RIP and Thank You. Sammo Hung - Spiky little art punks from Cardiff. Lovely. NOW SADLY SPLIT (DECEMBER 2004) What the fuck is going on in Cardiff?! Bristol Live Music - Comprehansive gig listing site for Bristol CURRENTLY UNDERGOING A MAJOR OVERHAUL SO IT DOESN'T WORK Bristol Uncovered - On Star 107.2 FM on Sunday and Monday nights between 7pm and 10pm. Respectfully great mix of local and international music. NOT ON STAR FM ANYMORE. ALL THE BEST TO RICHARD AND GARY. |
